Roll up, little king! The Krewe of ‘tit Rex, just like many krewes on the street of Mardi Gras, has been throwing with the best of them. But what they seem to lack in size, they make up for in sheer style, humor, and creativity!
Founded in 2009, the Krewe of ‘tit Rex is the first and only MicroCrewe of New Orleans. The “‘tit” is short for the word petite, and “rex” means “king.” They like being tiny so much they’ve even shortened their name! As a group of business operators, teachers, artists, and general bon vivants, the group found common cause in parodying the super krewes of super scales that constantly looked to set new records for the size of their floats, numbers of revelers, their throw counts, and overall extravagance.
Featuring satirical floats, the krewe makes shoe boxes seem like mega-huge boats! In fact, many of the Krewe of ‘tit Rex in New Orleans got their start making miniature parades out of cut-up shoeboxes with their friends back in their schooldays. The Krewe of ‘tit Rex plans on roaring back into action each and every year possible.
Despite their petite size and adorable decor, the floats of ‘tit Rex have gnarly, adult themes that aren’t afraid to speak truths and taunts to all who would see themselves as “bigger.” When small is subversive, ‘tit Rex goes even tinier! They became famous for resisting a lawsuit by the larger Rex organization, who said that the word “Rex” in “‘tit’ Rex” infringed on their name.
They clapped back by flipping the “e” in their name, which makes them not only difficult to challenge, but also immeasurably cool due to their clever resistance as most people cannot type the misaligned “e” and needed to resort to using the normal letting in plain media. The Krewe of ‘tit Rex instantly became New Orleans heroes for those who seek a more organic, democratic feel to their krewes who think that these folks harken back to what the spirit of Mardi Gras is really about!
As a general parade layout, the ‘tit Rex krewe starts near the St. Roch Tavern before making its way down towards St. Claude Avenue. Afterwards, the parade takes a left, then another onto Music Street. Music Street meets up with Franklin Avenue and travels down until taking a right on Royal. On Royal, ‘tit Rex makes another right onto Mandeville, hops a left onto Burgundy, and jaunts right onto Marigny. As the final ‘tit turn, they make a left at St. Claude and halt at the Allways Lounge.
